Update for Saturday October 1st,

The market is open for business this Saturday.  I spoke with several of the farmers and expect a wide variety of items available this Saturday.

In the apple department, we are in prime time.  I spoke to Tim Hileman from Kistaco Farm.  They will have McIntosh, Jonathan, Empire, Red Delicious, Jonathan Honeycrisp, Gala and Cortlands.

And if you have not tried Kistaco Farm cider yet this season, you owe it to yourself to pick up a gallon or half gallon.  It has excellent balance between sweet and tart flavor.

Prices on apples are excellent, especially when you buy in quantity.

Kistaco will also have a variety of vegetables including Bell Peppers, Hot Peppers, Eggplants and Tomatoes.

I spoke with Rick Zang from Zang's Greenhouse.  Rick will have a wide variety of local vegetables, including potatoes, beets, beans, greens, leeks, onions and shallots.  Rick always has a selection of Pennsylvania mushrooms.  Concord grapes from Erie County will be available.

Fruits and vegetables are also be available at the Kennedy and Greenawalt stands.

SAVE THE QUINCE!

And this brings me to the topic of Quince.  Quince is an unusual fruit.
Years ago, backyard quince trees were common. People would cultivate them to harvest the fruit for cooking in pies or preserves. Inedible in raw form, and looking like a cross between a pear and a golden apple, quince cooks up sweet, with a vibrant rose color and a floral aroma and flavor.

Unfortunately, many people do not realize how delicious quince products are.  I was speaking to the farmers a few weeks ago trying to see if somone can get me some.  Brian Greenawalt told me that he know a few Amish farmers that have quince trees on their property.  But he said that the farmers have begun cutting them down because they did not know what to do with the fruit.

I aksed him to tell the farmers NOT to cut down the trees, and instead send some of the fruit to the market.  Half jokingly, I asked Brian to get a bushel for me.  Sure enough, last Saturday when I saw him at the market, he told me he had my bushel of quince.

So I had to get busy figuring out what to do with it.  I found some very simple recipes to make either quince paste or quince jam.  The quince paste is great to serve with certain kinds of cheese, particularly goat and sheep milk cheeses.  I tried it with some of the Riverview Dairy goat cheeses that are available at the PA Made Cheese stand. I found they work really well together.

So please check out these really easy recipes below.  Stop by the Greenawalt stand to pick up some quince.  Please, help save the quince!

Update for Saturday September 24th

The market is open for business this Saturday.  I did not speak with the farmers this week, so I don't have a specific update for you.   I do think that the items available will be very similar to last week.  So in other words, lots of great locally grown fruits and vegetables at great prices.

Last week I was impressed by what I saw at the market.  I picked up a basket of pickle cucumbers to make some pickles with.  The variety of apples available is increasing.  It was also great to get the first batch of fresh cider from Kistaco Farm.

Please check out the PA Made Cheese counter as we received quite a lot of cheese this week- Fresh curds from Arsenal Cheese, goat cheese products from Riverview Dairy, and aged cheeses from Clover Creek Cheese Cellar.

Please visit the market tomorrow!

Update for Saturday September 17th

This is a great time of year to visit the market because we still have lots of typical summer fruits and vegetables, as well as the arrival of some of the fall varieties.

So you will still be able to find peppers, corn, beans, tomatoes and mellons- just to name a few.  Last week for peaches!

But new arrivals will inlcude a variety of squash like butternut and acorn, leeks, and fruits like apples and concord grapes.

Apple varieties from Kistaco Farm will include Honeycrisp, Gala, and McIntosh.  And yes, Kistaco Farm will also have fresh Cider!  Come and get it.

Please stop by the market this Saturday to get some of these great locally grown varieties.  Remember that prices are excellent this time of year, especially when you buy baskets and bushels.

We just received a batch of fresh roasted coffee from Jamaica, so please stop by the Kew Park Coffee Bar for a fresh brewed cup or a pound of beans.

See you this Saturday.

General Market Update

There will be a great variety of locally grown vegetables and summer fruit.

This week we will see lots of varieties of tomatoes including heirlooms.  Peppers are also in their prime and many varieties are available.

There will also be great fruit, especially in the mellon department- honeydew, canteloupes and of course watermellons. The peaches, both local and from Chambersburg, are fantastic.  Please enjoy them while you can.

You can stop by the Greenawalts, Kennedy, Kistaco or Zang booths.

Please also remember to stop by the PA Made Cheese booth for locally made artisinal cheeses, and the California Olive Oil Connection for "local" extra virgin Olive Oil.  These are great accompaniments for the local meat and vegetables available at the market.

We just received a fresh shipment of goat cheeses from Sam and Susy Byler from Riverview Dairy.

The Kew Park Coffee Bar will have iced coffee, fresh squeezed lemonade and limeade.

Please stop by to see us this Saturday.

Update for Saturday August 20th

I spoke to a few of the farmers this week.  All I can say is that we are definitely in the prime of summer.

Please also remember to stop by the PA Made Cheese booth for locally made artisinal cheeses, and the California Olive Oil Connection for "local" extra virgin Olive Oil.  These are great accompaniments for the local meat and vegetables available at the market.

For example, every week we get a delivery of fresh cheese curds from Arsenal Cheese.  I would suggest that you prepare them as you would with fresh Mozzarella-  Slice some tomatoes, top with fresh cheese curds and drizzle on the CA Olive oil.  Finish with chopped basil.  Serve it with a steak.  Yum!

The Kew Park Coffee Bar will have iced coffee, fresh squeezed lemonade and limeade.

Please stop by to see us this Saturday.
