Hello Friends and Neighbors,

I have had a lot of questions about when we would be getting more locally grown items at the market.  So I checked with the farmers to see what we are likely to see this Saturday.

You will find a variety of different types of lettuce, mixed salad greens, and micro greens.  Check out Kistaco, Zang and Greenawalt Farms  for these items.

Kistaco Farm will have fresh local apples and fresh cider, as always.  They will also have vegetable transplants (cabbage, broccoli, kale, collards, lettuce, chard).

Zang's will have ramps, which is a local delicacy that is only available for a short time.  They will also have plants and flowers.

Stop by the California Olive Oil Connection for some Extra Virgin Olive Oil to go with the salad greens.

J.L. Kennedy Family Meat Stand will have their usual supply of locally grown meat and poultry.  Specials for this week are:
  • Boneless pork loin chops
  • Boneless pork loin roasts
  • Smoked Pheasants
Also remember to order your holiday items ASAP-  like smoked hams, pheasant, and LAMB, or any other special cut you need for your holiday table.  Stop by the market or call Val at the farm at 724-898-2316.

Bike Rack

Please note that we now have one of those cool circular bike racks installed in front of the building.  So bike on in!  Special thanks to Christine Berger from the Mayor's office and Emily Keebler from Patrick Dowd's office who made this happen!

See you at the market!

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

I went to California recently to visit some of the Olive Oil producers I have been working with.  I visited Art Kishiyama from Olio Nuevo, located in Paso Robles.  I also visited Kathleen Elliot from Hillcrest Ranch, located in Sunol.

These were very different operations.  Kathleen operates a very small farm that has 130 year old trees.  The farm has been in her family since the early 1900s.  The farm is on top of a mountain in a beautiful setting.  She is a passionate person and it is clear that she is very connected to her family farm.  She only produces a few hundred gallons a year.  It is certified Organic, and is very special stuff.

Art Kishiyama operates a relatively new farm, as the trees were planted in 2003.  He is an engineer by background and is very into all the latest technology to monitor moisture, temperature, etc. in the growing and milling process.  His Reserve Blend oil recently won a Gold Medal Award from the California Olive Oil Council.

Both oils are 2011 vintage.  They are both certified Extra Virgin by the California Olive Oil Council.

I will have them for sale at the market starting this Saturday.  Please come and give them a taste. Of course we always provide free tastes.  Bring your own clean bottle or we sell reusable bottles for $2.

The weather reports for the weekend are looking good, so please come out and stop in the market, visit your neighbors and check out the offerings of all of our farmers and vendors.

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

I am out in California visiting olive oils producers.  I hope to learn a lot, and bring back some great new oils to sell at the market.  This is the time of year when the producers blend and bottle what they have pressed in December. So I expect to have new oils arriving to the market over the next few weeks.

The market will be open this Saturday with a full compliment of farmers and vendors.  So please try to make it to the market to support your local farmers.

Val Kennedy wants to let everyone know that the special for this Saturday is VEAL, VEAL, VEAL.  Yes, this is the tremendous locally grown Butler County veal that we only get a few times a year.  We will not have another veal day until June.  So do your self a favor and call in an order!

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

I did not send out an update message last week because I went up to New York for the Big East Tournament.  As luck would have it, Pitt lost before we got there, but we still managed to have a good time.   We ate our way across the city.

I don't have any specific update for this Saturday other than to say that we will have a full compliment of farmers and other vendors this week.  The weather forecast is predicting warm weather, so it should be a nice day to come out to the market.

I do want to highlight a great article in today's PG written by Miriam Rubin- about cooking chickens.  Of course we have some real tasty chickens available at the market as well as the veggies to go along with them!

Please go to this link:  http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11076/1132394-34.stm

See you at the market.

David Lagnese.
