Hello Friends and Neighbors,

Introducing "PA Made Cheese"...Coming this Saturday to the Market

A few months ago we started selling cheese from Riverview Dairy at the market. Owners Sam and Susie Byler and their family had been bringing their cheese to the market for the past year and a half.  But the trips from Emlenton in Clarion County down to Pittsburgh were taking their toll.  It was consuming too much time away raising goats and making the cheese.  After talking to Sam and Susie, we offered to sell their cheese at the market.

We've had a lot of customers ask us if we could expand our cheese offerings.  We started doing research and meeting other cheese producers.  We tasted lots of samples and got the opinions of many people in the local food community.

I am happy to report that there are some excellent cheeses being made in Pennsylvania!  We decided to keep our offerings exclusively to small Pennsylvania cheese producers- thus the name- PA Made Cheese.  It's an expansion of the "direct from the farm" concept we have been promoting by bringing coffee in from the Kew Park farm in Jamaica, and the olive oil from small farms in California.

We are proud to offer PA Made Cheese at the market beginning this Saturday.  Here is summary of our offerings for this week:

Arsenal Cheese- Cannonball Curds

Clover Creek Cheese Cellar- Aged cheddar, Galen's Good Old (Gouda), Bruschedda

God's Country Creamery- Heavenly Havarti, Parma

Hidden Hills Dairy- Gouda Gold, Allegheny, Buttercup

Riverview Dairy- Chevre, Feta, Meadowbelle

The cheese will be cut to order from whole wheels.  Of course free tastes will be provided when making selections.

We plan to continue to expand our offerings over the next few weeks.  Please feel free to make suggestions on the types of cheese you would like to see at the market.

Please stop by and try PA Made Cheese.

Other market updates

Some new locally grown items appeared at the market last week, and I expect even more this week. These include local lettuce and greens.  There were also many locally grown plants and flowers.  I was impressed by the wide selection of flower and vegetable transplants.  Potted flowers and hanging baskets are also available.  These make great mothers day gifts.

Please stop by the Zang, Kistaco and Greenawalt booths.

Bike Rack

Please note that we now have one of those cool circular bike racks installed in front of the building.  So bike on in!  Special thanks to Christine Berger from the Mayor's office and Emily Keebler from Patrick Dowd's office who made this happen!

Please visit the market's website for information on the market and all the vendors.  You can sign up for a weekly email update.

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

I just got back from Jamaica, so did not have a chance to check with any of the farmers.  But I do expect a full complement of farmers and other vendors at the market this Saturday.

While in Jamaica, I was able to visit the Kew Park Coffee Farm.  I had the opportunity to spend the entire day on the farm with Peter Williams, owner and proprieter of the farm.  It was a very interesting and I learned a lot about the art of growing and processing coffee.  I am glad to report that the 2011 crop is coming along very nicely.   The Coffee cherries are healthy and developing nicely.

Also, we are very close to completing our application to become a licensed importer of coffee beans from Jamaica.  Soon we will be able to import larger supplies of "green" beans and roast them locally here in Pittsburgh.

I took a bunch of photos and will have some printouts at the market this Saturday.  I also brought home more of the Jamaican light brown sugar which goes great with the Kew Park Coffee.  Please stop by the coffee bar and check it out.

See you at the market!

David Lagnese

Hello Friends and neighbors,

I have had lots of questions from folks asking if the market will be open this Saturday, the day before Easter.  The answer is yes we will be open. The day before Easter is usually a very big day at the market.

We will have a full contingent of vendors, with lots of goodies for the holidays.  Of course the Greenawalts will have their local eggs.  Lots of fruits and veggies including some locally grown items will be available at Zangs, Kistaco and Greenawalt Farm stands.  Easter flowers will also be available.

The J.L. Kennedy Meat Stand of course will have meat.  Val Kennedy let me know that they are running low on the special holiday items such as lamb and hams.  So if you are interested, please call out to the farm as soon as possible.

The J.L.Kennedy Meat Stand will have all of their regular beef pork and poultry items plus Capons!

The number at the farm is 724-898-2316.

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

I have had a lot of questions about when we would be getting more locally grown items at the market.  So I checked with the farmers to see what we are likely to see this Saturday.

You will find a variety of different types of lettuce, mixed salad greens, and micro greens.  Check out Kistaco, Zang and Greenawalt Farms  for these items.

Kistaco Farm will have fresh local apples and fresh cider, as always.  They will also have vegetable transplants (cabbage, broccoli, kale, collards, lettuce, chard).

Zang's will have ramps, which is a local delicacy that is only available for a short time.  They will also have plants and flowers.

Stop by the California Olive Oil Connection for some Extra Virgin Olive Oil to go with the salad greens.
***********************************************************
J.L. Kennedy Family Meat Stand will have their usual supply of locally grown meat and poultry.  Specials for this week are:
  • Boneless pork loin chops
  • Boneless pork loin roasts
  • Smoked Pheasants
Also remember to order your holiday items ASAP-  like smoked hams, pheasant, and LAMB, or any other special cut you need for your holiday table.  Stop by the market or call Val at the farm at 724-898-2316.
