Update for Saturday, May 11th
Hi everyone, the market will be open this Saturday as usual. Please see below for an update.
Update on locally grown items
The locally grown items are starting to roll in. Based on my conversations with the farmers today, I expect to see several locally grown items including:
- Ramp (probably the last week)
- Asparagus
- Rhubarb
- Swiss Chard
- Morrell mushrooms
- Spring lettuce
- Spinach
- Micro greens
I also expect to see lots of hanging baskets, potted flowers, vegetable and flower transplants for the garden.
Check out Kistaco, Zang and Greenawalt stands for these items.
Speaking of rhubarb, I need to refresh my memory on how to cook rhubarb. Mariam Rubin seems to always give us a timely recipe in the Post-Gazette. Today she has a recipe for Rhubarb, strawberry and ricotta turnovers. They look delicious. Check it out.
Finally, check out the really nice article that the P-G ran on Sunday on our very own Chris Bandy. Chris crafts hand made products out of salvaged wood. His work is just beautiful. I am a big fan of his cutting boards, but he makes many different items and also does custom work. He is at the market every Saturday. Who knew he had so many other talents.
See you at the market- David Lagnese

PA Made Cheese-
We expect to have a fresh batch of Birchrun Blue Fat Cat. We also have a fresh shipment of cheese from Riverview Dairy- feta and aged tome cheese.
We also have an inspiration cheese from cheese maker Laura Chenel in Sonoma County, California. We have 4 wheels of a goat milk cheese called "Melodie." It's an ash-rind semi-soft cheese. It is mild but very tasty. This cheese won first place in 2012 from the American Cheese Society. That is quite an honor. Stop by and taste it and lets see if we can get one of our local cheese makers to try making it here in Pennsylvania.
The Greek Gourmet- will have homemade spinach and meat pies at the market each week- in addition to 20+ flavors of hummus. Stop by and talk to Jack at the booth.
BANDY Woodworks will have children's toys and games, and great items for the home and office using local reclaimed and salvaged wood and non-toxic finishes. Cutting boards and wine racks make a great Valentine's gift for the foodie on your list! Their booth is on the right when you walk in the front door from N. Sheridan, directly across from Greenawalt's. Preview some of the items carried at the market by visiting www.bandywoodworks.etsy.com.

Update for Saturday, May 4th
Hi everyone, the market will be open this Saturday as usual. Please see below for an update. We will have some new locally grown items this week.
Update on Ramps
Ramp season is underway. We had quite a lot of them at the market last week. Between Rick Zang and Brian Greenawalt we had several bushels and they all sold. I ran in to Chef Trevett Hooper from Legume and asked him how he was preparing them. He is doing all sorts of things with them including pickling, making purees and grilling them. He suggest taking the whole ramp, leaf and bulb, and drizzle with some olive oil, season with salt and pepper, and then cook them on the grill for a few minutes while you are grilling any kind of meat. I did that and served it with some chciken from Kennedy's.
I also minced the ramps, leaf and bulb, and suteed them in olive oil. Then served them on top of some steamed rice. Very simple and very good.
So please dont be afraid to try them. Even 1/4 pound can add a lot of flavor to a dish.
