Update for Saturday, December 21st

The Christmas holiday is right around the corner.  Luckily, there is still one more Saturday market before the big day.  So make sure you get to the market this Saturday both to get food for the table, and to pick up a holiday gift or a house warming gift.

The Farmers Market is a great source of gifts and house warming presents for the holidays.  I think people really appreciate getting locally made and grown items.  You can use your imagination and put together a nice basket of items from the market.  Here are some of my suggestions:

o A woven basket from "Hand Made Items from Uganda"
o A hand made wooden toy or cutting board from Bandy Woodworks
o A smoked pheasant from J.L. Kennedy Meat Stand

o A potted flowering plant from Zang's Greenhouse
o A pound of coffee beans from the Kew Park Coffee Bar
o A container of Salsa from Cinco de Mayo
o A bottle of olive oil from the California Connection

o A piece of local cheese from Wheel and Wedge Cheese
o A home made pastry from Rebecca Plum
o A jug of cider from Kistaco Farm
o A jar of all-purpose sauce from Mrs. Jones
o A container of hummus from the Greek Gourmet

o A bottle of balsamic vinegars from Pastamore

o A jar of Amish made pickles from Greenawalt Farm

See you at the Market-

Greenawalt Farm

Brian expects to have Jerusalem artichokes, carrots, turnips, onions (several varieties), garlic, cabbage, potatoes (blue, white, Yukon gold and red), carrots, cauliflower, and fresh herbs.  Brian has freshly grown, dried herbs.  Also Brian will have five varieties of dried shelling beans and dried corn.   A full line of winter squash is still available.

Greenawalt's has a new batch of jarred products from Amish Country, as well as  fresh local eggs.  They also have some cured meat items from Lancaster County- bacon and kielbasa.

Kistaco Farm

The Kistaco Farm stand will still have some locally grown items such as local apples grown on the farm.  They will also have some shipped in fruit and vegetables and of course fresh squeezed cider.  As always, fresh baked bread from Wood Street Bread Co.

Zang's Greenhouse...Rick will have fresh Cranberries from Wisconsin.  Locally grown items include winter squash, shallots, onions, garlic, mushrooms, lettuce and micro greens.

Non locally grown items include green beans, beets, zucchini, cabbage and a few other items.  In the fruit department, limes, lemons, oranges, grapefruit, grapes- all shipped in.

Holiday items include Christmas wreathes, poinsettias, amaryllis.

California Connection-
Lots of dried fruit and nuts from California.  These items are great on your holiday table.  With fresh locally grown fruit season over, they are a good replacement.  This Saturday we will have the following at the market:

Apricots (organic)
Dates (organic)
Peaches
Bing and Rainier Cherries
White Figs
Plouts
Raisins
Raw almonds
Pistachios (organic)

Also lots of California extra virgin olive oil.

Introducing Wheel and Wedge- Our family has been selling  locally made cheese at the market for 3 years now.  We started with the goat cheese made by Riverview Dairy, but then expanded to other local cheese makers.  We called it- PA Made Cheese- which emphasized the origin of our cheese.  Although we love our local cheese producers and the cheese that they make, we have been wanting to expand our offerings to include cheese styles that are not being made locally.  But we also realized that we needed to sell a larger volume of cheese to support the expansion. So we also wanted to find a venue to sell cheese more than just on Saturdays. We decided to open up a cheese stand at the Pittsburgh Public Market- which is open 5 days a week- Wednesday through Sunday.  Having the outlet at PPM will actually help support our offerings at East Liberty because we will be able to stock cheese from more cheese makers and a offer a more diverse variety of styles.

To reflect this change, we decided to abandon the PA Made Cheese name and adopt the name Wheel and Wedge.  The new name emphasizes our focus on stocking full wheels of cheese and cutting it by hand into wedges.  We will work exclusively with regional producers of farmstead and artisan cheese.  We are also expanding the cheeses being aged in our Armstrong County cheese cave.  We are now aging cheddar and gouda, in addition to the goat and sheep milk cheese that we have been aging since July.

The first tangible result of these changes is that we have new varieties of cheese for sale at the East Liberty Market.  New producers include:

  • Parish Hill Creamery- Westminster West, Vermont- Provolone cheese made by renowned cheese maker Peter Dixon
  • King's Kreamery- Lancaster County, PA- Camembert, mushroom leek and young sheep cheese
  • Misty Creek- Lancaster County, PA- Semi soft aged goat cheese and a blue cheese made with three milks- cow, goat and sheep
  • Shepard's Hollow Farm- Lancaster, PA- they make a combination cow and sheep milk cheese and a sheep milk blue

More cheese from other producers in Ohio, Indiana and Vermont are on their way.

Of course we can only sustain this with your support so please stop by Wheel and Wedge to try some of our new cheese.  We always give free tastes before buying and cut wedges of any size.

Kew Park Coffee Bar-  We have a fresh batch of dark roast beans that were roasted on the farm in Jamaica.  We also have medium roast beans that were roasted by Commonplace Coffee Roasters. We have Florida citrus for juice- oranges, tangerines and grapefruits.

The Greek Gourmet- will have homemade spinach and meat pies at the market each week- in addition to 20+ flavors of hummus.  Stop by and talk to Jack at the booth.

BANDY Woodworks BANDY Woodworks will there this week with lots of great items for holiday gifts.

www.bandywoodworks.etsy.com

Pastamore' barrel-aged vinegars-  These are being brought to us by long time market customer Sylvia Lynch.  Hopefully you have been able to stop by and say hello to Sylvia and also buy a bottle of her vinegar.  Please stop by and get a great gift for the Balsamic Vinegar lovers in your life.

Did you know that you get multiple health benefits by adding Balsamic Vinegar to your diet!  It's Low in Calories, has Antioxidant Properties, can Suppress your Appetite and aid  in Digestion. Each 1 tbsp. serving of balsamic vinegar provides 4 mg of calcium and 3 mg of phosphorous. A serving a balsamic vinegar has 18 mg of potassium, adding to the 2,000 mg you need for the day. Balsamic vinegar provides nearly .12 mg of iron per tablespoon. Adding a little balsamic vinegar to your grilled chicken at lunch, or on your side salad at dinner, is an additional way to get all of these essential minerals.

Cinco de Mayo Salsa-
After being away for the summer selling at the outdoor markets, they are back with their wonderful salsas and cooking sauces. They offer a wide variety of sauces and salsas.  Many of them are great for cooking with, not just for eating with chips.  Please stop by and say hello.
