Update for Saturday, June 7th

It looks like a beautiful weekend and we hope the you will want to get it started with a visit to the market.   We will have lots of great stuff at the market, inlcuding locally grown spring items.

The big new item this week is local strawberries!  Get there early!  Other local items including kale, asparagus, spring lettuces, rhubarb, and tomoatoes.  Also lots of plants and hanging baskets for the garden.

We have some new cheeses available, pleases see the Wheel and Wedge update below for details.  It is a very special cheese from Vermont.

Since its Rhubarb season, I want to share an article that our friend Miriam Rubin did last week in the Post-Gazette.  We always get questions from folks on what to di with rhubarb, so this article should help. You may remember that Miriam visited the market last year after she published her Tomatoes Cookbook.  She plans to make another visit to the market this summer, probably in July.

Please come out to the market and support your local farmers.

See you at the market.

Hello Farmers Market Fans

I am sending this special message to let you know about an event being held tomorrow right in our neighborhood at the Obama Academy.  Its the Food Revolution Day and its happening tomorrow from 3 to 6.  This is the second year that we are celebrating it with a major event in Pittsburgh.  Check out their website or the brief description below for more information.

David Lagnese

*****************************************************************************

http://www.foodrevpgh.com/food-revolution-day/

Food Revolution Day is a global day of action for people to make a stand for good food and essential cooking skills. It’s a chance for people to come together within their homes, schools, workplaces and communities to cook and share their kitchen skills, food knowledge and resources. Food Revolution Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of good food and better food education for everyone by focusing on three simple actions – cook it, share it, live it.

The 2nd annual 2014 Food Revolution Day Pittsburgh will include integrative activities, food booths and theme-based exhibits. We anticipate the event being one of the largest Food Revolution Day events globally with attendance of over 5,000. Thanks to partnership with the Pittsburgh Global Shapers the event will recognize and invigorate cross-sector efforts dedicated to sustaining food-focused community development. Beyond the one-day event, the goal is to raise $250,000.00 to advance the Cooking Club’s programming in the Pittsburgh region.

20 Chefs from the City’s Top Restaurants Pittsburgh celebrity chefs join with students from the Obama Academy to prepare a reinvented school lunch menu at no cost to friends, family and event attendees. Chefs from the city’s top restaurants will be making a reinvented school lunch menu. Everyone eats for free! Restaurant and chef partners include:
