Farmers Market Coop of East Liberty Update

Posted 5/5/2011 9:57pm by Miranda Combs.
Hello Friends and Neighbors,

Introducing "PA Made Cheese"...Coming this Saturday to the Market

A few months ago we started selling cheese from Riverview Dairy at the market. Owners Sam and Susie Byler and their family had been bringing their cheese to the market for the past year and a half.  But the trips from Emlenton in Clarion County down to Pittsburgh were taking their toll.  It was consuming too much time away raising goats and making the cheese.  After talking to Sam and Susie, we offered to sell their cheese at the market.

We've had a lot of customers ask us if we could expand our cheese offerings.  We started doing research and meeting other cheese producers.  We tasted lots of samples and got the opinions of many people in the local food community.

I am happy to report that there are some excellent cheeses being made in Pennsylvania!  We decided to keep our offerings exclusively to small Pennsylvania cheese producers- thus the name- PA Made Cheese.  It's an expansion of the "direct from the farm" concept we have been promoting by bringing coffee in from the Kew Park farm in Jamaica, and the olive oil from small farms in California.

We are proud to offer PA Made Cheese at the market beginning this Saturday.  Here is summary of our offerings for this week:

Arsenal Cheese- Cannonball Curds

Clover Creek Cheese Cellar- Aged cheddar, Galen's Good Old (Gouda), Bruschedda

God's Country Creamery- Heavenly Havarti, Parma

Hidden Hills Dairy- Gouda Gold, Allegheny, Buttercup

Riverview Dairy- Chevre, Feta, Meadowbelle

The cheese will be cut to order from whole wheels.  Of course free tastes will be provided when making selections.

We plan to continue to expand our offerings over the next few weeks.  Please feel free to make suggestions on the types of cheese you would like to see at the market.

Please stop by and try PA Made Cheese.

David, Cristy, Marco and Maria Lagnese

Other market updates

Some new locally grown items appeared at the market last week, and I expect even more this week. These include local lettuce and greens.  There were also many locally grown plants and flowers.  I was impressed by the wide selection of flower and vegetable transplants.  Potted flowers and hanging baskets are also available.  These make great mothers day gifts.

Please stop by the Zang, Kistaco and Greenawalt booths.

Bike Rack

Please note that we now have one of those cool circular bike racks installed in front of the building.  So bike on in!  Special thanks to Christine Berger from the Mayor's office and Emily Keebler from Patrick Dowd's office who made this happen!
