Farmers Market Coop of East Liberty Update

Posted 6/30/2011 9:26pm by Val Kennedy.
Update for Saturday July 2nd- 4th of July weekend

This should be a busy day at the market this Saturday as everyone prepares for the July 4th weekend.

New locally grown items continue to appear each week, and this Saturday is no exception.

I spoke with the famers and new items I am hearing about include candy onions, yellow squash, savoy and red cabbage, red and black rasberries, red beats and cucumbers- and there may be a few others.

I am sorry to say that the local strawberry season is over.  It was good while it lasted, but we are back to eating the tasteless California and Florida varieties.  Or, you can take advantage of the seasonal local berries that are still available.

Locally grown items that will be available this Saturday
  • Sweet Cherries
  • Sour Cherries
  • Blueberries
  • Red and black rasberries
  • Broccoli
  • Yellow squash
  • Zucchini
  • Snow peas
  • Micro greens
  • Green onions
  • Pickles
  • Cucumbers
  • Kale
  • Collards
  • Lettuce (several varieties)
  • Savoy and red cabbage
  • Red beats
Stop by the Kistaco, Zang and Greenawalt booths for the fresh fruit and veggies.

Oh, and speaking of beets and other locally grown stuff, Miriam Rubin is at again with her PG column "In the Garden."  She has 3 great recipes, one for cabbage and 2 for beets.  Please check it out:

Bike Rack

Please note that we now have one of those cool circular bike racks installed in front of the building.  So bike on in!  Special thanks to Christine Berger from the Mayor's office and Emily Keebler from Patrick Dowd's office who made this happen!
